The Beatitudes

THE BEATITUDES (MATT. 5:1-12) (LUKE 6:20-26)

The verses that we read are known as the beatitudes which are special blessings ascribed for a certain reason.

(Rev 1:3)

(3)  Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

There are beatitudes found throughout scripture (Psa. 1:1, 32:1-2, 119:1-2) (Prov. 8:32, 34) (Isa. 30:18, 32:20) (John 20:29), just to name a few.

Many Christians in the this church age, try to "hang their hat" on these beatitudes, thinking that it deals with soul salvation, but we need to remember that Christ did not come for the Gentiles, but for the lost sheep of the house of Israel. (Matt. 15:24). When Christ gives these, there is NOT ONE person that is baptized into the body of Christ. They are all pork abstaining sabbath keeping JEWS.

I: BLESSED ARE THE POOR IN SPIRIT, FOR THEIRS IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN. (MATT. 5:3)

(A) Notice that HEAVEN is not the subject, but the Kingdom Of Heaven is.

there is a difference. The Kingdom of Heaven is a literal, physical, visible,

Davidic kingdom that Christ will set up at his 2nd Advent, and will rule from

Jerusalem for 1,000 years. (Dan. 2:44) (2 Pet. 1:11). This Kingdom will be

set up on the land grant that was promised for the Jews through Abraham.

(Gen 17:8).

1. Kingdom of Heaven only mentioned in (Matthew), written

to Jews.

(B) No salvation by penitency (repentance) Here.

(C) The "poor" here is dealing with the poor in spirit, not being poor, as in having

nothing. (contrite or broken spirit such as in (Psalms)

II: BLESSED ARE THEY THAT MOURN FOR THEY SHALL BE COMFORTED. (MATT 5:4)

A: A lot of people that mourn today, are never comforted. (Matt. 13:42) In (John 15:16), Christ tells what he means with this. Bear much fruit and love each other.

B: To assume that every reader of the Sermon on the mount is a Christian is a disaster.

C: A commentary on the beatitudes that does not warn of hellfire is shambles.

(Matt. 5:22)

III: BLESSED ARE THE MEEK: FOR THEY SHALL INHERIT THE EARTH. (MATT 5:5)

A: This is borrowed from (Psalms 37:11) with reference to (Zeph. 2:3) This deals with the 2nd advent.

B: The meek have never inherited the earth and never will until the 2nd coming of Christ.

C: Every verse in the Bible, dealing with inheritance, deals with millennial possession of Palestine. (Col. 3:24) (Ephes. 5:5) (Gal. 5:21) (James 2:5) This possession of land is a inherited by the meek suffering in this age. (Rom. 8:17)

(2 Tim 2:12) earned reward (Luke 19:12:27) Ours is a millennial reign with Christ.

IV: BLESSED ARE THEY WHICH DO HUNGER AND THIRST AFTER RIGHTEOUSNESS, FOR THEY SHALL BE FILLED. (MATT 5:6)

A: (Prov. 21:21) Spiritually applied, we are thirst after the righteousness of God who is Christ (Matt. 6:33) (Rom. 10:1-4) (2 Cor. 5:21)

B: To the saved in this church age, it could mean future rewards for doing right, now.

C: To the audience present at the time in history, an indication that those listeners whose hearts are right are going to understand the 1st coming and have a chance to receive the Messiah. (Acts 4:31)

V: BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL: FOR THEY SHALL OBTAIN MERCY (MATT. 5:7)

A: Spiritual truth is apparent and is explained in (Rom. 12:8, 19-21)

(James 2:12-13)

B: To teach mercy @ the last judgment on the basis of the mercy that humans showed to humans is over-reaching the "sermon" too far. It will surely land a self-righteous Bible perverter in hell.

VI: BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART: FOR THEY SHALL SEE GOD (MATT. 5:8)

A: The Lord here, is repeating an O. T. doctrine. (Psalm 24:4) Context is 2nd advent. (Psa. 24:6)

B: This deals with a literal, earthly, visible, reign of a messianic King.

(vss. 1, 3, 8, 10) (Acts 15:9-11)

VII: BLESSED ARE THE PEACE MAKERS: FOR THEY SHALL BE CALLED THE CHILDREN OF GOD (MATT. 5:9)

A: Christ was not a peace maker (Luke 12:51-53) (John 7:43, 10:19), however he gave peace to those who believed the revelation that God gave through him.

(John 14:27)

B: For those who did not believe, "fools" and judgment. (Luke 24:25)

(John 5:44:47)

VIII: BLESSED ARE THEY WHICH ARE PERSECUTED FOR FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS SAKE: BLESSED ARE YE, WHEN MEN SHALL REVILE YOU, AND SHALL SAY ALL MANNER OF EVIL AGAINST YOU FALSLY, FOR MY SAKE.

(MATT 5:10-11)

A: The righteousness here is synonymous with Christ himself. (Rom. 10:1-4), thus also found in the O.T. (Deut. 30:20) identicle to (Rom, 10:5-9)

IX: REJOICE AND BE EXCEEDINGLY GLAD: FOR GREAT IS YOUR REWARD IN HEAVEN: FOR SO PERSECUTED THEY THE PROPHETS WHICH WERE BEFORE YOU. (MATT. 5:12)

A: Rejoice is the hard part of the verse in view of some things that they will be called upon to endure.

B: A Christian is admonished the same in (Rom. 12:12) and (1 Pet. 3:14-18).

C: The reward for them will be at the Great White Throne Judgment.

(Rev. 11:18, 20-21)

D: The Christian's rewards in this dispensation will be a the judgment seat of Christ. (1 Cor. 3) (2 Cor. 5) (Rom. 14:10-12)

What we have here is Christ speaking of the 2nd advent.
